Sammy's Story
Sam was born on the 6th of November 1980 in Lagos, Nigeria. Although he didn’t have lions and giraffes in his backyard like most people assume, he did own a pet monkey in high school.
Rather than follow Gods early call on his life, Sammy decided he would rather be a superhero [true story]. His unlikely journey began in high school when two of his friends each had separate dreams in which they saw Sam preaching to a room full of white people. Since Sam only knew two white people growing up, he decided to follow these ‘dreams’ by applying to colleges in America.
Sam’s life took a big turn when his mom, apparently uninspired by his desire to wear tights and save the world, randomly came home with a plane ticket with his name on it. The flight was leaving in 3 hours for the US. Within 48 hours, Sam went from eating potato chips on his couch in Nigeria to standing in New York city with $2000 in cash, an unlikely dream and an accent strong enough to give anyone a migraine.
By fall of 1999, Sam gave up his quest to become a crime fighting machine and decided to follow Gods call on his life. His passion to communicate Gods word became so intense and ‘uncontainable’ that he spent several hours every week preaching to his bedroom furniture.
A few years later, Sam got an opportunity to serve at a college ministry where he led and taught over 100 mostly white college students. He was convinced this was his dream job until God asked him to quit in January of 2007. Well aware that this might be the dumbest decision he ever made, Sam followed his heart hoping his obedience meant following Jesus like he had never done before.
Two months later Sam asked a group of his friends to join him on a four week journey of following Jesus. His challenge ultimately led 35 college students to give $3700 in one night to build a well in Africa. Several months later, he challenged his home church of a few hundred people to follow Jesus in the same way and they gave $7000 in one morning to build two wells.
Inspired and overwhelmed by what God was doing, Sam began to dream. If 35 students can build a well and potentially save hundreds of lives, what would happen if an entire generation of students joined this cause? how many wells could we build? how many lives could we save? Imagine the revolution...
In March 2008, God opened the door for Sam to team up with Sanctus Real in the fall and travel the US with the same message. Driven by a dream that ‘nothing is impossible for a surrendered generation’, Sam expected the fall tour to be nothing short of a revolution and sure enough, after 2 months, thousands of people 'jumped in' and provided clean water for 70,000 Africans .
His crazy dreads, unique journey, passion for students and great storytelling are just a few of the many things that make Sam a unique and relevant communicator. He also has mad skills in Halo and Madden but unfortunately is an average guitar hero.
Sam is currently on staff as the college pastor at the Vineyard Church in Toledo, OH where he lives with his new bride. He hopes his marriage to Ashley is an inspiration to those wishing to marry outside of their league.
